Savor

Savor

Had I known it was the last time
I would have stopped to take in the moment
I would have leaned in and looked closely
Listened and touched and smelled and breathed it all in
I would have bottled it up into a sacred space inside me
a space I could return to

I wish I would have known
but I just didn’t know

The last time we stood on that land
the last time we kissed
the last time I spoke to my dad
the last time I nursed my baby
the last time we were all together
the last time we said goodbye

So many things seem like they would just go on
and on
but they did not
I am left to paw through the scraps of my memory
I make a memory collage
Collages can be sacred too, right?

I wish I would have known
but I just didn’t know
